LADY GAGA SLAPPED WITH $31.5M PLAGIARISM LAWSUIT BY FRENCH ARTIST

According to Radar Online , a French
artist by the name of Orlan is suing
Mother Monster for more than
$31.5 million plus interest. Yes,
interest. I’m laughing, too, no be
small matter.
"In February, she cancelled her Born
This Way Ball Tour at a cost of
approximately $25 million to
undergo hip surgery and now, as
she’s reportedly preparing a
triumphant return to the stage at
the MTV VMA’s in August, there’s
more bad news: RadarOnline.com
has exclusively learned that French
artist ORLAN is suing Gaga for more
than $31.5 million over claims
Mother Monster repeatedly
plagiarized her visual work". writes
Rada Online
Her attorney, Philippe Dutilleul, told
Radar, “Lady Gaga copied the look
and style of ORLAN [in promotional
materials and appearances] for Born
This Way.”
Dutilleul added, “Whether or not
it’s ethical to steal someone’s life is
not in question. Lady Gaga and her
record company went one step too
far and crossed the red line by
reproducing two major artworks by
ORLAN without her permission.”
THE OFFENSES ARE AS FOLLOWS:
The first, Bumpload, is a 2009
sculpture of a hybrid being with
growths on her face and shoulders
— a look Gaga rocked on the cover
of her Born This Way single in 2011,
in the video and in many
performances and appearances
related to the track.
“All you have to do is put them side
by side and it’s very striking,”
Dutilleul says.
The second piece in question,
Woman With Head, a 1996
performance showing ORLAN’s
head on a table, appears almost
exactly replicated in the opening
sequence of the Born This Way
video.
“It’s the same haircut,” Dutilleul
says. “The same forehead implants.
The same makeup.”
“Copyright rules follow a strict
protocol,” he continues. “Lady Gaga
should have asked ORLAN
permission for this. She never did,
nor did she contact ORLAN. She
made over $400 million thanks to
ORLAN’s work and efforts, so we
are asking for 7.5 percent, as French
law allows.”
And though Born This Way was
released more than two years ago,
Dutilleul says ORLAN was initially
unsure if she wanted to take on this
fight.
“It was not an easy decision for
ORLAN to move forward in this
case, even if the copyright violation
is obvious,” the attorney explains.
“One always thinks twice before
engaging in such a battle. This is
David vs. Goliath, and ORLAN
needed some time to think of the
consequences. She would have
moved much faster if Lady Gaga
was not so famous.”

The official release;
Over the past two and a half years, Instagram

Instagram and bring you another way to share
your stories. When you go to take a photo on
Instagram, you’ll now see a movie camera icon.

this morning or an Instagrammer on the other
side of the world taking you on a tour of their
city, a mother sharing her joys in parenting as her
children laugh and play or your favorite athlete
taking you behind the scenes.
So what does this mean for your content?

Cultists, Security Guard Rape Undergraduate In Ekiti

Four suspected members of a cult
group and a security man at a private
polytechnic in Ekiti State have been
arrested for allegedly gang-raping a
student of the institution.
The rape victim (name withheld), who
is an ND 1 student of the polytechnic,
told PUNCH Metro at the Ekiti State
Police Command headquarters in Ado
Ekiti on Wednesday that the suspects
stormed her room, tied her up and
took turn to rape her.
The four suspected rapists are Kunle
Aralepo 20, Oluwaseun Akomolafe, 23,
who are ND II students of Business
Administration and Kehinde Adeyemi
and Ayo Olomola, who are on the
run.
The victims added that one of the
boys had asked her out and she
refused.
She also accused one of the security
men in the polytechnic, Mr. Seyi
Adanbioje, of raping her the same
day at his residence.
The victim said the Chief Security
Officer of the school directed
Adanbioje to take her to police station
to make an official report of the rape
case.
She said after leaving the station, the
security man took her to his residence
and also forcefully had sex with her.
The security man, however, denied
raping the female student. He
explained that he granted the girl an
“asylum” because she said she could
not sleep alone in her house.
He said, “She could not sleep alone
because she was afraid that those
who had earlier raped her might
come back again.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr.
Victor Babayemi, who paraded the
suspects, said police investigation had
shown that rape cases had been
rampant at the institution.
He said the police were still probing
such cases of rape and why they were
not reported to the police.
Babayemi said the police would
thoroughly investgate the fresh rape
incident and allow justice to take its
course.
The PPRO said, “A group of four
young men namely, Aralepo Kunle,
Akomolafe Oluwaseun (both ND II
Business Administration students),
Kehinde Adeyemi and Ayo Olomola,
aka AY Bishop, who was expelled
from the school in March for rape
went to the house of a female student
of the polytechnic, broke her door to
gain entry, tied her hands and legs
and gang-raped her.
“They also robbed her of her phone
and the sum of N5,000.00. A security
guard at the polytechnic, Seyi
Adanbioje, 28, was also found to be
part of the gangsters. He was told to
take the girl to the police station and
make a report but he took a detour to
his house, where he also raped the
victim.”
He said medical report confirmed that
the victim was raped.
In a similar case, the police said the
proprietor of a private primary school,
Mr. Ibitoye Babatunde, who was
arrested for allegedly raping an 11-
year-old pupil of his school, had a
case to answer.
Ajibade, who denied the accusation,
said a man who saw him while
entering into a bush to defecate
demanded money from him and he
threatened to deal with him if he
refused.
He said he refused and the hoodlum
raised the alarm which attracted a
crowd.
But the PPRO said the medical report
confirmed that the girl’s hymen had
been broken.
The police also paraded two
commercial motocyclists (okada
riders), who were accused of raping a
young lady.
The PPRO said the suspect – Babatope
and Oluwasusi Tope- gave the girl a
free ride and took her to another
place where she was raped.
In a related development, the police
also said that a 17-year-old boy had
been arrested for defiling a three-
year-old girl.

Prof. Wole Soyinka ~ I Was Not Behind Achebe’s Accident

NOBEL Laureate, Professor Wole
Soyinka has berated critics, who
attributed the cause of late Chinua
Achebe’s accident that eventually
confined him to a wheel chair until he
recently breathed his last, to the
“spotless ram” he presented to him as
a gift for his sixtieth birthday. Soyinka,
in a release entitled “The Village
Mourners Association,” lamented the
reaction of a category of people he
likened to “homicidal clerics,” whom
he said began to spread the
falsehood after Achebe’s burial.
According to Soyinka, it was wrong for
people to situate the ram he
graciously presented to a friend on his
birthday, which he (Achebe) warmly
received with a comment “Typical of
Wole,” as the cause of Chinua
Achebe’s motor accident. Soyinka tells
his own story in the release, saying:
Here goes the story, for those who
seek light relief from ponderous
unctuousness: “What happened was
that I found myself unable to return to
Nigeria for a Colloquium in honour of
Chinua’s sixtieth birthday.
My dramatic mind immediately
scrambled for some striking manner
of compensation. “So I telephoned a
business friend who had some
agricultural connections in Delta State
and told him: find the chunkiest,
spotless ram in Delta State – all white
or all black, but a thoroughbred of
striking physique. “Find a leather
pouch, tie it to its neck with the
following message and deliver it at the
venue of the Colloquium. I no longer
recall the exact dictated wording,
nothing inspirational, just the usual
felicitations and injunctions to turn
that ram into asun for general
feasting.
“Those who attended the event will
recall the grand entry of the gift – as
reported by one and all, including the
foreign visitors, and Chinua’s reported
reaction, seated on the podium.
He shook head and said, ‘Typical of
Wole.’ “The ram was then led off to
meet its destiny at the hands of the
gathered. (As a side note, it was I who
took a gift away from his seventieth at
Bard University – a sobering flash of
time past that resulted in my ELEGY
FOR A NATION.
I had that poem re-published to mark
the day of his funeral.) “Our story is
only beginning. On the way back from
that celebration, Chinua had his
accident and was flown to the United
Kingdom. At the first opportunity, I
made my way there and called up the
High Commissioner, Dove-Edwin, who
was certain to know the hospital
location.
“It turned out that he also planned a
visit that afternoon, and he agreed to
give me a ride. We waited – I was
joined by two others – waited, and
waited, then a phone call came from
him that the visit had been called off.
The High Commissioner would
explain why, on arrival – over a
promised dinner, as compensation.
“That explanation was this: Dove-
Edwin had received communication
that some of ‘Chinua’s people’ – a
university professor among them,
who was named – had pronounced
publicly that ‘Chinua should have
known better than to accept a
spotless ram from his enemy’ – yes,
that was the word used – ‘enemy.’
“I verified this report from various
other sources. Later, an alternative
diagnosis surfaced: ‘Chinua had been
too long away from the chieftaincy
politics of his hometown, otherwise
he would have realized that the title
that he took was coveted by some
others – and these were deeply
steeped in traditional psychic combat.’
“In short, those rivals ‘did him in.
’ Both diagnoses competed for
dominance for a while, petering out
eventually. “Before the promotion of
that alternative cause-and-effect
however, Dove-Edwin had re-
scheduled, and we had a most
bracing, optimistic afternoon with
Chinua. Yes, our patient was
eventually told the cause of the earlier
postponement, and he had a good
laugh.
“On my return to Nigeria, I could not
wait to take the opportunity of a
public lecture to invite all desperate
enemies to please send me their rams
of choice – spotless, spotted, piebald,
striped or nondescript – so I could
treat starving writers to free meals in
my home for the rest of the year. And
I promised to taste a piece of each
ram before serving.
” Soyinka said it was that same breed
that “continues to sow poison in the
minds of the susceptible.” He said
those people may want to position
themselves of “being there, even
when absent,” yet they
“ostentatiously” position themselves at
the event, or at vicarious gatherings to
denounce, attribute sinister
motivations, and inseminate hate
against those whom their “pedestrian
vision cannot see.” “Your very
loudness proclaims your absence,”
Soyinka said.
“You were always absent. You will
always be absent. So, this
communication is not really meant for
you but for those potential almajiri –
whose minds you corrupt daily with
your jeremiads in that
accommodating madrassa known as
Internet,” he said. Addressing his
critics, Soyinka said they should not
misinform their audience.
“Äs a teacher, I lament your failure to
use the opportunity of the passing of
a revered writer to turn your younger
generation in enlightened directions.
“You have chosen instead to coarsen
their sensibilities and breed in their
minds misunderstanding, suspicion
and above all – hate!”
“You will have understood by now
how I have come to view you as no
different from the homicidal clerics
who arm youths with kerosene and
match, cudgel and knife, a few Naira
in their beggars’ bowls, and dispatch
them to set fire to structures of
comradely cohabitation, of reflection,
of mind enlargement, and destroy
communities of learning. “Your gospel
of separatism goes beyond the
geographical – in which I have not the
slightest interest! – but the
humanistic.
The difference is in the weapon – in
your case, poison, mind corrosion.
“The means – Internet, and it’s wide
open, undiscriminating generosity.
That is where you lay spores of
poison, and doom future generations
to a confinement of human
relationships within the darkest
corners of the mind. “You are beyond
pity. Kindly absent your selves from
my funeral, when that event finally
intrudes,” Soyinka said.

Nigeria-Uruguay Preview: Super Eagles look to land knockout blow

It was a case of
mixed fortunes for
Nigeria and Uruguay
in their opening
Confederations Cup
fixtures.
The history books
will tell of a resounding 6-1 win for the
Super Eagles over minnows Tahiti, but
the Africa Cup of Nations champions
were far from at their best and came in
for criticism after the game.
Dynamo Kiev striker Ideye Brown could
be named in the starting XI at the
expense of Anthony Ujah or Ahmed
Musa - both of whom failed to score
against the Polynesian island.
Uruguay endured struggles of their
own, as they went down 2-1 to Spain,
in what was very much a one-sided
affair against the world and European
champions, though Oscar Tabarez may
give the same XI a second chance to
impress on Thursday.
DID YOU KNOW?
*Victory for Nigeria will see them
qualify for the Confederations Cup
semi-finals.
*AC Milan forward Nnamdi
Oduamadi scored a hat-trick in the
6-1 win over Tahiti, prompting
Rossoneri chief Adriano Galliani to
call for him to be promoted to the
first team next season.
*The Super Eagles have kept just one
clean sheet in their last five games
but are unbeaten since defeat to
Peru in May last year.
*Uruguay had just six shots to
Spain's 16 in their 2-1 defeat on
Sunday.
The Copa America winners also
enjoyed just 29% of possession,
with la Roja dominating from start
to finish.
*Luis Suarez (pictured, right) is
Uruguay's top scorer in their 2014
World Cup qualifying campaign with
eight goals.

International superstar, entertainer
and Oliver Twist crooner, Dapo
Oyebanjo popularly known as
D’banj is always breaking new
grounds in terms of his wardrobe
and clothing items. In a recent
newspaper interview, he confirmed
he wears the same wristwatch as
American rapper Jay-Z, valued at
$50,000.
He has been appointed as the
Hennessy Artistry artiste for 2013
and also recently became the
Goodwill ambassador for the Bank
of Industry. D’banj has continued to
rise in stardom despite his split
from erstwhile partner and friend,
Don Jazzy. He has continued to
command huge sums of money in
endorsements, appearances and
performances thus still making him
the highest earning Nigerian artiste
of all time. His DKM concert being
held on June 23rd 2013 at the Eko
Hotel & Suites will feature
International rapper, 2Chainz as
well as another surprise guest.
This increasing earning power has
also led to an increase in spending
as D’banj just took delivery of what
is known as the “Suit of Money”.
Designed by Okunoren, Nigeria’s
leading clothing brand, the Suit is
made of actual One Hundred Dollar
bills and cost a whopping $25,000,
which is approximately N3.7 million.
It was entirely sewn by hand in
London but was then taken to Italy
for the specialized Milanese
buttonholes to be done at the same
factory used by Tom Ford.
His new song titled Blame it on the
Money”, featuring Snoop Lion and
fellow Good Music act Big Sean goes
further to emphasize his wealth
where he states he is unapologetic
for being rich, it is set to become
one of the major anthems this
summer.

normal person, Neurological
Doctors treating the embattled
Governor in the United States have
told his family and the state
government.
It was gathered that after several
months of treatment in the US, the
Doctors have now informed the
family of Suntai and the Deputy
Governor of the state, during a
recent visit, to send Suntai home to
manage his worsening condition, as
there was nothing they could do to
bring him back to stable condition.
DailyPost recalled that Suntai was
first treated at the famous John
Hopkins University Hospital in
Baltimore, Maryland, before he was
later moved to a rehabilitation
centre in upstate, New York, both of
which have not yielded any positive
result.
Medical sources said when Suntai
was brought in from Germany, his
brain was swollen and had totally
lost significant control of his ability
to recognize people or speak
audibly. He disclosed that the
Governor now drools like a baby.
It would be recalled that Suntai in
October 2012, was flown to
Germany for brain treatment after
surviving an air crash near Yola
Airport.
DailyPost leanrt that the State
government has spent close to $3.5
million on his treatment in the US
alone, yet no improvement.
The Governor’s wife and a few other
politicians, including the
Commissioner of Information,
Emmanuel Bello, are reportedly
manipulating the media by claiming
that Suntai has fully recovered and
would soon return to govern the
state.

Muslim man gets 11 years jail after burning Bible

Muslim man received a harsh
prison sentenced after he burned
the Bible, according to court
proceedings in Egypt.
The Islamic preacher, who is known
in Egypt for his hate speeches
against Coptic Christians, was
sentenced to 11 years in prison for
burning a Bible in front of the U.S.
embassy during a protest against
an anti-Islam movie, last year.
An Egyptian court in Cairo
sentenced Ahmed Abdullah on
Sunday for insulting religion and for
burning of a Bible. He was also
fined 3,000 Egyptian pounds, or
about $430.
Abdullah's son was sentenced to
eight years in prison and a fine of
2,000 Egyptian pounds, or $286 for
his role in the Bible burning.
Abdullah publicly burned the copy
of the Bible as part of a protest
against the anti-Islam movie
"Innocence of Muslims". The movie
was produced in the United States
by a Coptic Christian of Egyptian
origin, and raised anti-American
protests in the Muslim world.
Abdullah also announced that he
planned to send his grandson to
urinate on the Bible.
The decision was a surprise to
many, since the Egyptian courts are
heavily biased towards Islamists.

"I would have been married if MoHits had not broken up"- Dbanj

Culled from a recent Interview with
Funsho Arogundade of PM News
When are you going to get
married and have kids?
To tell you the truth, I would have
been married if Mo’Hits had not
broken up. The crisis really affected
me and I had to start so many
things afresh. Just like my mentor
2Face Idibia, I will be married and
have my own kids one day.
How much do you miss Don Jazzy?
I really miss Don Jazzy and I miss
the whole Mo’Hits crew. But are we
talking about the engine or about
the whole car?
How much would you say D’Banj is
worth now?
Oshee! I can tell you that Eja nla (big
fish) is comfortable. But sincerely, I
don’t know how much I am worth
because I have not really taken my
time to check. In fact, I don’t even
want to check so that it won’t get
into my head. But I must confess to
you that God is really involved in my
life right now.

Italian designers Dolce&Gabbana sentenced to prison for tax evasion

Italian fashion designers Domenico
Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the
men behind fashion power house,
Dolce & Gabbana were today June
19th sentenced to one year and
eight months in prison by an Italian
court after being found guilty of tax
evasion. They were also fined
€500,000.
The multimillionaire designers were
accused of hiding millions of euros
from Italian tax authorities, charges
they deny and have said they intend
to appeal against any conviction.
Italian authorities are accusing them
of moving their brand to a
Luxembourg-based holding
company Gado - in 2004, so they
could avoid declaring taxes on
royalties of about 1 billion euros.
The Italian authorities have been
investigating the designers for about
six years now and they were actually
cleared of tax evasion/fraud
charges at a previous trial in April
2011 but Italy's highest court
overturned that ruling, ordering that
the case be sent back to trial.
Their sentences have been
suspended pending their appeal.

Another Baby Born With Quran In Lagos

Culled from PM News
Residents from various parts
of Lagos have been coming to
catch a glimpse of a baby
allegedly born with a
miniature Quran at 9,
Oguntade Street, Shasha area
of the state. (crowd at the
residence where the baby was
born)
Incidents like these are
scientifically impossible, but
residents of the area say it is
true even though some of
them confessed that they did
not see the baby clutching the
miniature Quran, the holy
book of the Muslims. They
were only told about it.
It took efforts for P.M.NEWS
reporters to gain access into the
one-room apartment of the baby’s
parents as a result of the crowd that
took over the place.
The mother of the baby, Kabirat
Lamidi, a 32-year old hairstylist, said
right from the conception of the
baby, she had been sick.
She said when the baby refused to
come out after 11 months, she went
for a scan where it was shown that
she had an object in the womb with
the baby.
The Ede, Osun State indigene who
said she had been married for 10
years, said she was shocked to
discover that few seconds after the
baby was delivered, she pushed out
a Quran.
“I have been hearing about such
incidents and I have always insulted
people thinking it could never
happen. I believe it is a gift from
Allah,” she said.
She said as a Muslim, she was not
even dedicated and did not know
how to pray, expressing surprise
that such an incident could happen
to her.
The mother of three said she had
always given birth in the hospital
but that on this day, she went into
labour so fast that she could not
move.
“My advice to people is that they
should henceforth watch their
mouth. I didn’t believe before now,”
she said.
Mrs. Saudat Olawuwo, a staff nurse
with the Shasha Medical Centre who
assisted with the delivery, said she
was called by neighbours when the
woman was in labour.
Mrs. Olawuwo with 17 years working
experience, said the woman was
supposed to put to birth on 16 May,
but it did not happen.
“By the time I came the day she was
in labour, the baby was already
coming out. So I assisted her.
“After that, we were expecting the
placenta, but the woman began
behaving like one about to run
mad. I was so confused.
“The woman was shouting that she
wanted to push again and all of a
sudden, the Quran, wrapped in
nylon and stained with blood
jumped out.
“Out of confusion, I ran out and
called people who came to see. We
also called a Muslim cleric around
the area who came and prayed for
the baby,” she said.
Father of the baby, Luqman Lamidi,
said he was in a drinking bar when
he was called and told that his wife
had delivered a baby with a Quran.
He said he did not believe until he
came and saw the Quran covered
with blood.
“I arrived home and saw a lot of
crowd and could not even enter. In
fact, I am surprised that a drunk like
me could produce a child that came
into this world with a Quran,” he
said, adding that he had become a
changed person.
Chief Imam of Oguntade, Shasha,
Alhai AbdulRafiu Opeloyeru
Oyedokun, said he was the one who
tore the nylon from the Quran after
he was called to the place.
“When I came, people were still
doubting if the object was a Quran
or not, so I tore the nylon with
blood on it publicly and everyone
confirmed it.”
As the yet to be named baby boy lay
asleep, P.M.NEWS noticed that each
time the Quran is placed on his
chest, he consistently lifted his
hands up and would not drop the
hands until the Quran is taken off.
There was a big controversy in May
last year following the alleged birth
of a baby boy said to be clutching a
miniature Holy Quran at birth.
The baby was born at a white
garment church in Mushin, Lagos
State, Southwest Nigeria.
While some disputed the claim,
others said it was possible. A large
crowd gathered at 1, Sonde Street,
Ijeshatedo, Lagos home of the boy’s
parents as news of the birth spread
rapidly.
His mother, Mrs. Kikelomo Ilori, 32,
a Cosmetologist, told P.M.NEWS
that he was born after she had
carried the pregnancy for about 10
months.
“When my baby was delivered
holding a Quran in his hand, the
nurse said the Quran should be
thrown away. But I insisted my
mother must see it before any
action could be taken,” Kikelomo,
who is a Christian, further
explained.
Corroborating the story, Senior Rev.
Victoria Yetunde Dada said during
the pregnancy, Kikelomo was always
coming to her for prayers and
counselling.
“I advised her not to abort the
pregnancy because she might die in
the process. Again, I told her the
foetus was sent by God and will be
great,” Apostle Mother Dada told
our correspondent.
Reacting, Medical Director of Bodet
Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, Dr. Bode
Tawak said scientifically, it was not
possible for a baby to be born
holding a Quran.
“How big is the baby’s hand to hold
the Quran? How big is the Quran?
How did the Quran get into her
mother’s womb? I don’t know how
a Quran can get into a womb. But
there are things you can’t explain,”
Dr. Tawak responded.
He said while the incident cannot be
explained medically, in Nigeria many
mysterious things happen.
A Kaduna-based medical
practitioner, Dr. Munir Yusuf said
from a medical point of view, it was
not possible, but added that
depending on the size of the Quran,
it was possible metaphysically.
He explained that if the Quran is
small enough to pass through the
diameter of the vagina, with the
child, it is possible.
In the same vein, a herbal medicine
practitioner, Chief Dr. Bola
Adegunloye believes nothing is
impossible, but said too much
importance must not be placed on
the incident

Researchers use Moore's Law to calculate that life began before Earth existed

On this semilog plot, the complexity
of organisms, as measured by the
length of functional non-redundant
DNA per genome counted by
nucleotide base pairs (bp), increases
linearly with time (Sharov, 2012).
Time is counted backwards in
billions of years before the present
(time 0). Credit: arXiv:1304.3381
[physics.gen-ph]
(Phys.org) —Geneticists Richard
Gordon of the Gulf Specimen Marine
Laboratory in Florida and Alexei
Sharov of the National Institute on
Aging in Baltimore have proposed, in
a paper uploaded to the preprint
server arXiv , that if the evolution of
life follows Moore's Law, then it
predates the existence of planet
Earth.
Moore's Law, of course, famously
suggests that the complexity of
computers grows at a rate of double
the transistors per circuit every two
years, resulting in exponential
growth. Looking at the complexity of
computers today and working
Moore's Law backwards shows that
the first microchips came about
during the 1960s, which is when
they were actually invented. In their
paper, Gordon and Sharov take the
same approach, only they apply it to
biological complexity .
The two researchers acknowledge
their ideas are more of a "thought
exercise" than a theory proposal,
but at the same time suggest their
calculations ought to be taken
seriously. They start with the idea of
genetic complexity doubling every
376 million years—working
backwards, they say, means that life
first came about almost 10 billion
years ago, which of course predates
the creation of Earth itself. Most
scientists agree the Earth formed
just 4.5 billion years ago. Assuming
that Moore's Law does apply to
biological complexity, this would
suggest that life began somewhere
other than on Earth and migrated
here.
Of course there are other
possibilities to explain what
happened, as the two acknowledge
—life could have evolved following
Moore's Law during certain periods
but not at others—a deep freeze
could have temporarily halted
changes in complexity, for example,
or cataclysmic events could have
periodically killed off the more
advanced biotic life forms. There is
also the possibility that the
development of life had to reach a
certain stage of development
before it began to conform to
Moore's Law. Then of course, there
is the very real possibility that the
beginnings and evolution of life
don't conform to Moore's Law at all.
Gordon and Sharov's paper is likely
to set off multiple rounds of
discussion regarding not just the
origin of life on Earth, but in the
galaxy as well. If life truly predates
our planet, and it can be proved,
what impact might that have on
religious thought and what might it
mean to those looking for meaning
in its very existence?

Earth, arXiv:1304.3381 [physics.gen-

Abstract
An extrapolation of the genetic
complexity of organisms to earlier
times suggests that life began before
the Earth was formed. Life may have
started from systems with single
heritable elements that are
functionally equivalent to a
nucleotide. The genetic complexity,
roughly measured by the number of
non-redundant functional
nucleotides, is expected to have
grown exponentially due to several
positive feedback factors: gene
cooperation, duplication of genes
with their subsequent specialization,
and emergence of novel functional
niches associated with existing
genes. Linear regression of genetic
complexity on a log scale
extrapolated back to just one base
pair suggests the time of the origin
of life 9.7 billion years ago. This
cosmic time scale for the evolution
of life has important consequences:
life took ca. 5 billion years to reach
the complexity of bacteria; the
environments in which life
originated and evolved to the
prokaryote stage may have been
quite different from those envisaged
on Earth; there was no intelligent life
in our universe prior to the origin of
Earth, thus Earth could not have
been deliberately seeded with life by
intelligent aliens; Earth was seeded
by panspermia; experimental
replication of the origin of life from
scratch may have to emulate many
cumulative rare events; and the
Drake equation for guesstimating
the number of civilizations in the
universe is likely wrong, as intelligent
life has just begun appearing in our
universe. Evolution of advanced
organisms has accelerated via
development of additional
information-processing systems:
epigenetic memory, primitive mind,
multicellular brain, language, books,
computers, and Internet. As a result
the doubling time of complexity has
reached ca. 20 years. Finally, we
discuss the issue of the predicted
technological singularity and give a
biosemiotics perspective on the
increase of complexity.

The federal government has pegged the cut-off points for the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to 180 for Universities and 150 for polytechnics and colleges of education.
This was decided at the 4th combined policy committee meeting on admission to tertiary institutions held in Abuja yesterday.
180 has been the cut-off point for degree awarding institutions for some time now but representatives of other institutions argued that the cut-off point for polytechnics and others be reduced to 150 in order to attract students and was accepted and adopted.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai urged youths and students to enroll themselves into the innovative enterprise institutions and engage in technical and vocational education and training to help improve the economy of the nation.
She reminded institutions to adhere strictly to the admission time-table that has been prepared by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde said by next year, the examination and its conduct would be improved upon.

Chinua Achebe honored in Nigeria funeral

follow @moshbyte on twitter for more or like on facebook Mosh Byte

Writer Chinua Achebe shunned Nigeria's corrupt politicians and twice turned down national honors, never fearing to criticize those he felt ruined his country. On Thursday, however, the lawmakers and the country's elite came to praise him.
Hundreds attended Achebe's funeral among the rolling hills of his eastern Nigeria home, a service that saw President Goodluck Jonathan literally hold up the writer's books. The gold plaque on his coffin simply called him the "eagle atop the Iroko tree" in his native Igbo language.
It was a fitting tribute to the respect Achebe carried among the people here and for many others around the world who knew him through his books, which many say is the first African voice heard in modern literature.
