How to prevent kidney failure

follow @moshmustapha on twitter for more or like on facebook Mosh Byte

KIDNEY failure grabs the headlines mainly for two reasons: when it afflicts the famous or a public figure and when it afflicts the poor who launch appeals for help on mass media, especially the television. Yet, in spite of the suffering and economic ruin it brings on many, it is an eminently preventable disease. Indeed, in many instances, the kidneys only happen to suffer collateral damage from other illnesses. In this article, I describe briefly the main causes and, more importantly, how to prevent the eventual fatality of kidney failure.

Yaya-Toure
Chelsea are interested in signing unsettled Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure this summer but may face stiff competition from Real Madrid, according to the Sun.
Toure has been a revelation at the Etihad Stadium since his move from Barcelona in 2010 and was a key factor in City pipping rivals Manchester United to the Premier League title last season.
However, the Sun claims the Ivorian international is ready to walk out on City this summer with the 29-year-old said to have informed officials at the club that he’ll buy himself out of the remaining two-years of his contract at a cost of £22m if he isn’t offered a new deal by this weekend.

North Korea, a country where private computer ownership is illegal and most civilians can only access a tiny, closed intranet through shoddy knock-off software, is not the sort of place where you might expect to find the scariest and most talented of hackers. But reports from both ABC News and the Associated Press on the sudden computer crashes at South Korean banks and TV broadcasters pointed to speculation that North Korea was behind the cyber shutdown.
There are three pieces of circumstantial evidence: First, North Korea recently threatened the South (which it does all the time); second, the North itself recently experienced a bizarre and unexplained widespread computer outage that appeared to be linked to a possible outside attack. The third piece is the most persuasive: More evidence suggests that North Korea was behind past, similar attacks.
Here’s the A.P.:

bitly

The team at bit.ly, a popular link-tracking service, has come out with an interesting new analysis on how people use social media around the world.
To make the report, bit.ly tracked clicks on its links from 220 countries over the course of 12 months. (To give you an idea of how many clicks that is, the site has logged more than 100 billion since January 2011.) Bit.ly then analyzed which social networks referred the biggest proportion of traffic in each country, indexing them against the world average.
The results are intriguing, though they come with a caveat — the data  measure only links filtered through the Bit.ly universe, and not all Internet traffic or users overall.

  1. Almost everyone uses Twitter, Facebook and YouTube heavily — except in China, where those services are blocked. (Bit.ly doesn’t have data for North Korea or a few African and Pacific countries, possibly because there’s too little data.)

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has strongly condemned Monday’s suicide bombing in Kano in which innocent citizens were killed and maimed, saying it is time for all stakeholders in the country to act decisively to stem an impending national catastrophe.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said it is now futile to expect that the federal government can end the crisis, as it has so far shown that it possesses neither the vision nor the capacity to confront the worsening acts of terrorism in the country.

Math favours India, and I'm a mathematician: Google chief

India will add a significant part of the next 5 billion Internet users, with maths suggesting that it is the country to look out for, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said today.

"This place is going to be rocking," said Mr Schmidt, who is in the national capital for the Google's Big Tent Forum.

"In the short term it is China, but math favours India. And I'm a mathematician," Mr Schmidt said when asked by Guardian's Editor-in-Chief Alan Rusbridger on his choice on India and China.

Speaking at the question and answer session with Mr Rusbridger, Mr Schmidt expressed great hope for the growth of Internet and broadband users in the country.

A report published by the European Commission Joint Research Committee claims that music web piracy does not harm legitimate sales.
The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies examined the online habits of 16,000 Europeans.
They also found that freely streamed music provided a small boost to sales figures.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said the research was “flawed and misleading”.
“It seems that the majority of the music that is consumed illegally by the individuals in our sample would not have been purchased if illegal downloading websites were not available to them,” wrote the researchers in their report, Digital Music Consumption on the Internet: Evidence from Clickstream Data.
