The first woman to receive a uterus from a deceased donor is pregnant following a successful embryo transplant - The Telegraph
Mrs Sert became the first woman in the world to have a successful womb transplant from a dead donor in August 2011
Derya Sert, 22, was revealed to be almost two weeks pregnant in preliminary results after in vitro fertilisation at Akdeniz University Hospital in Turkey's southern province of Antalya.
Her doctor, Mustafa Unal, said in a written statement: "She is doing just fine at the moment."
Mrs Sert was described as a "medical miracle" when she became the first woman in the world to have a successful womb transplant from a dead donor in August 2011 at the same Antalya hospital.
The news of her pregnancy will rekindle hopes for thousands of childless women across the world who are unable to bear their own babies.
Mrs Sert was born without a uterus, like one in every 5,000 women around the world. Her doctors waited 18 months before implanting the embryo to make sure the foreign organ was still functioning.
Hers was the second womb transplant to be performed in the world, the first being in Saudi Arabia in 2000 from a living donor. It failed after 99 days because of heavy clotting. Doctors had to remove the organ.
The baby is expected to be delivered via Caesarean section and the uterus removed from Mrs Sert in the months following the birth to avoid further complications and the risk of rejection.
The young woman had started to menstruate after the transplant, which her doctors had said was an important signal that the womb was functional.
However, experts have warned that the pregnancy carries several health risks to the mother as well as to the baby, including birth defects due to the use of immunosuppressive drugs as well as pre-term delivery.

Venice's Grand Canal to be Closed for first time in Memory

It is normally choked with vaporetto ferries, launches and smart wood-panelled speedboats, but Venice's Grand Canal will be closed to motorised craft for the first time in living memory on Sunday - Nick Squires.

The idea is to highlight the damage done to canal banks by the wake of boats and cut down on air and water pollution – if only for a few hours.

The lagoon city wants to encourage the use of boats with reduced fuel emission levels.
To underscore the point, there will be a display of electricity-powered boats.
Gondolas – which are propelled by gondoliers using only muscle power – will be exempt from the ban.
The closure, which will last from 10am until 3pm, is said to be the first of its kind ever imposed.
It will affect the entire length of the Grand Canal, which winds for more than two and a half miles between centuries-old palazzi, merchant's houses, churches and luxury hotels.
It has been described as "the finest street in the world, with the finest houses".
The initiative has been organised by Venice city council with the cooperation of organisations like the chamber of commerce.
"The day will reinforce the council's commitment to the battle against pollution and the damaging waves created by boats," said Ugo Bergamo, a city councillor.
Pierfrancesco Ghetti, a strategic planner for the council, said Venice had to "get smart" and use technology to cut down on the environmental impact of the thousands of boats that ply its canals each day.
The ban will not affect the giant cruise liners which visit Venice because they are too big to sail down the Grand Canal and instead use the parallel Giudecca Canal to reach the city's cruise ship terminal.
