Apple has recently acquired the indoor GPS mapping firm WifiSlam for
around $20 million. It’s a two year old Silicon Valley startup that
helps detecting a mobile phone user’s location via Wi-Fi signals.
Reportedly,
this move is likely a way to stay competitive with Google’s Android
devices, which already have an access to indoor mapping in places such
as shopping malls and airports.
Last
year, Apple tried to challenge the dominance of Google Maps by
releasing its very first home made mapping software with the launch of
the iPhone 5 and iOS 6, which was greatly criticized for being
inaccurate and confusing for which Apple was forced to apologize to its
users.
