Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is Time magazine's 2013 "person of the year," coming in first place in a poll conducted by the magazine that asked its readers to choose from a list of the world's most influential, official news agency MENA reported.
Sisi received 26.2 percent of the votes followed by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan with 20.8 percent, then in the third place came the pop singer Miley Cyrus with 16.3 percent.
The 44-candidate list included the names of a number of characters, most notably U.S. President Barack Obama who won the title last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, along with Iran's leader Hassan Rohani, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie.
The magazine traditionally asks its readers to vote for the person they feel most influenced the news, good or bad.
Time will announce officially the selection of its readers to the personality of the year in Dec. 6, while the editorial board announces the selection of the person who will carry the image of the cover on the eleventh of the same month.
Sisi has enjoyed immense popularity among Egyptians after responding to massive protests on June 30 to oust Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, despite continual protests by Muslim Brotherhood supporters around the country. Sisi was also credited with paving the transition by announcing a roadmap for the country that included the drafting of a new constitution, which was recently finalized Tuesday.
Several popular campaigns were organized in Egypt to push defense minister to run for president. However, Sisi mentioned on several occasions he doesn't intend to run in the presidential elections.
