In an announcement made on their blog, Bump CEO and co-founder David Lieb confirmed that the app has been purchased by Google. Bump is a smartphone app that allows users to share files, photos and contacts with a simple tap of the phone. The five-year old startup was acquired by Google for an unknown amount of money, but has raised about $20 million in VC funding to this point.
Said Lieb in the official announcement:
"Our mission at Bump has always been to build the simplest tools for sharing the information you care about with other people and devices. We strive to create experiences that feel like magic, enabled behind the scene with innovations in math, data processing, and algorithms. So we couldn’t be more thrilled to join Google, a company that shares our belief that the application of computing to difficult problems can fundamentally change the way that we interact with one another and the world."
While Bump hasn't exactly been the most used app of all time, it was a selling point for certain brands of phones for a short time and led to the release of Flock, and app for group photo albums.
For the record, Apple's iOS 7 release will come with a feature called AirDrop for wirelessly sharing with other iOS users. So it appears that Google is making sure that their Android product is ready to compete with the iOS updates. Bump currently is available for the iPhone, but that will most likely change. Also, Google has implied that the acquisition was just as much about the engineering and development teams as it was about the app. Talent costs money too and is usually worth it. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
