Newcastle are reported to be interested in signing a currently home-based Nigerian international.
Twenty two year old Godfrey Oboabona plays for Sunshine Stars and currently has sixteen caps for his country.
It is reported that Oboabona is being actively offered to European clubs by his agent and is keen to move abroad.
The Metro
report the versatile defender can also play in midfield and recently
had a trial at Arsenal but haven’t pursued their interest for the time
being, though it is claimed that they continue to watch him along with
other clubs.
In the Nigerian press a transfer fee of around £1m has been
speculated and needless to say the player fits the profile of a
Newcastle signing with his age, fee and no doubt wages not being a
problem.
Whether he is good enough is another thing.
Clearly Newcastle will need to strengthen their defence in the summer, especially with Coloccini likely to leave.
A speculative signing like this doesn’t look a bad move but you would
hope if Unite do make this type of signing it is as back-up to at least
three established and experienced centre-backs.
