BUSINESS Connexion said on Thursday it had developed two mobile applications (apps) for the BlackBerry 10 operating platform, which was launched on Wednesday.

BlackBerry, which has changed its name from Research In Motion, unveiled its long-awaited mobile operating system, BlackBerry 10, which it hopes will restore its glory.

The BlackBerry 10 operating system promises to be much faster, and give an improved user experience with many features.
Business Connexion said it was selected to develop Jan Braai and Table Magic apps.
With the Jan Braai app, people will be able to view recipes and demonstration videos by Jan Scannell, locate and rate butcheries in their vicinity, as well as see which butcheries he has visited and rated. Mr Scannell is behind the National Braai Day initiative.
Table Magic was South Africa’s first restaurant search, review and instant booking website, established by Kelly May to revolutionise the way South Africans find restaurants and make bookings, Business Connexion said.
The two apps are among the hundreds of local apps that are featured on the new BlackBerry 10 system. The platform has 70,000 apps ranging from news to entertainment.
In addition to the operating system, BlackBerry has launched new devices to run on the platform.
Mobile network operators Cell C and Vodacom would not comment on when the BlackBerry 10 devices would go on sale. 8ta said the BlackBerry 10 deals and devices would be available from March.
The BlackBerry 10 devices are aimed at the high-end market. While the prices have not been revealed, it is unlikely that the latest devices will come with the popular BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) flat rate of R59 for unlimited internet browsing and BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) chat service, which is being used by millions of people locally. BlackBerry said it would continue investing in the BlackBerry 7 operating system to cater for existing customers.
Steven Ambrose, CEO of Strategy Worx Consulting, said the BlackBerry 10 "will not in all probability" continue to use the BIS server-based offering and pricing that works for this model. He said data pricing for BlackBerry 10 would likely be the same as charged for the other smartphones running on the Android system, and the iPhone.
"The current BIS offerings will continue as a large portion of their market will continue to use BB7 (BlackBerry 7) and below devices for a few more years," he said.
World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck said the data-intensive environment of BlackBerry 10 did not lend itself to being managed through the encryption and compression network that BlackBerry had built globally, "so it’s not feasible to manage it through BIS".
"However, the text-chat component of BBM will still run through that architecture, so there are many creative possibilities that networks can allow to accommodate a low-cost approach to what has been the most popular feature of BlackBerry in emerging markets," he said
