England defender Ashley Cole

Chelsea's Ashley Cole is set to win his 100th international cap after being named in England manager Roy Hodgson's squad to face Brazil on 6 February.
Left-back Cole, who made his England debut against Albania on 28 March 2001, has been named in a 24-man squad.
Fellow Chelsea team mate Frank Lampard has been picked, as has Jack Wilshere, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Leon Osman and skipper Steven Gerrard.
The most notable exclusion was Tottenham's Scott Parker.

England's 100-cap club

  • Peter Shilton (125),
  • David Beckham (115),
  • Bobby Moore (108),
  • Bobby Charlton (106)
  • Billy Wright (105)
  • Steven Gerrard (100)
Parker is now fit again after returning from Euro 2012 with an Achilles injury, but Hodgson has deemed he is not yet ready to return to the International set up.
As expected youngsters Raheem Sterling, Jonjo Shelvey and Wilfried Zaha are all excluded and instead named in the Under-21 squad to face Sweden on 5 February, while Hodgson has taken the unusual step of naming only two goalkeepers - Joe Hart and sought-after Birmingham youngster Jack Butland.
Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is called up for the first time during Hodgson's tenure after recovering from injury, but his team mate Phil Jones is omitted from the senior squad and named in Stuart Pearce's Under-21 set up.
Jermain Defoe has also been included despite his current pelvic problem, joining Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck, plus Liverpool new-boy Daniel Sturridge, in attack.
Cole would become only the seventh player to have reached 100 caps for England, joining Gerrard, Billy Wright, Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, David Beckham and Peter Shilton.
England squad to face Brazil: Jack Butland, Joe Hart, Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott, Chris Smalling, Kyle Walker, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Leon Osman, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Daniel Welbeck.
England Under-21 squad to face Sweden: Ben Amos (Manchester United), Declan Rudd (Norwich City), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough), Ryan Bennett (Norwich City), Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton), Craig Dawson (Bolton Wanderers - loan from West Brom), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Tom Lees (Leeds United), Jack Robinson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Adam Smith (Millwall - loan from Tottenham Hotspur), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool), Nat Chalobah (Watford - loan from Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Will Hughes (Derby County), Henri Lansbury (Nottingham Forest), Jason Lowe (Blackburn Rovers), Josh McEachran (Middlesbrough - loan from Chelsea), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Benik Afobe (Bolton Wanderers - loan from Arsenal), Tom Ince (Blackpool), Connor Wickham (Sunderland), Wilfred Zaha (Crystal Palace - loan from Manchester United).

As expected the update to Windows Phone 7.8 for handsets running 7.5 has begun to roll out with Nokia acknowledging the fact for its handsets in an official blog post. The post confirms that anyone with an unlocked Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 or 900 can expect to see a notification for the update appearing sometime in February. Providing of course the user has notifications for updates enabled on their handset.
Although the update appears to have been around for quite a while, leading some to believe Microsoft was deliberately withholding it, the only excuse Nokia offers for its delay is that it has been released "following extensive software testing".

Microsoft launches Office 2013, Office 365 today

Starts the 60-day expiration clock for the suite's free previews

Microsoft will launch Office 2013 and new Office 365 subscription plans today, a move that also starts the countdown clock ticking for the expiration of free previews the company distributed last year.

On Monday, the Office team used Twitter to tease a kick-off event in New York City's Bryant Park. A new banner page on the Office website reads, "Coming January 29th. More time to do the things you want," also hinted at a rollout of Office 365 and Office 2013.
Microsoft had previously revealed all but the launch date for Office 2013, the name for the perpetual licensed version of the productivity suite, including pricing and licensing policies. Office 365, which has been revamped to include new subscription plans aimed at consumers and small businesses, will also debut today.
The launches of Office 2013 and Office 365, however, also mean that the expiration clock on the free Office previews begins to tick.
When Microsoft unveiled the previews last July, it told customers that they would "expire approximately 60 days after the next version of Office becomes available in your market." For most people running a preview, that will be near the end of March.
The previews will begin nagging users as the expiration date nears, according to an FAQ. Once past their sell-by date, the applications retreat to read-only mode, letting customers view and print existing documents, but not edit or save them, or create new documents.
Sticking with past practices, Microsoft is not offering discounts for those who tried out the Office preview. Prices for the suite start at $139.99 for Home & Student 2013, and $100 annually for Office 365 Home Premium. Customers who purchase the less-expensive Office 2010 through April 30 are also eligible for a free upgrade to Office 2103 or Office 365.
Users of Office for Mac 2011 should also expect an update today: Microsoft said one would be released at the launch of Office 365 to make the Mac version compatible with the new subscription programs.
All the Office 365 plans, from those for consumers to ones for small businesses and enterprises, allow Office for Mac 2011 to be installed as one or more of the five-per-household or five-per-user allowances.
Microsoft is also hosting one of its every-Tuesday webinars today at 12:15 p.m. ET, 9:15 a.m. PT, to highlight five features in Office 365 Home Premium, the consumer-oriented subscription plan.

The HTC Windows Phone 8X on the Daily

follow @moshmustapha on twitter for more or like on facebook Mosh M Blog

Introduction
While almost all of the AnandTech editors are using Android or iOS smartphones as their daily driver due to the relative maturity of those platforms (and oftentimes bleeding edge hardware within), Brian learned I'd been using the Windows Phone 7.5-equipped Dell Venue Pro as my daily driver for almost a year. 2-year contract plans in the United States amount to highway robbery, but a no contract deal from T-Mobile is actually very reasonable. As someone attracted to Windows Phone's UI and someone who preferred the physical keyboard, the Venue Pro turned out to be a perfect fit.
Unfortunately, time has revealed Windows Phone 7 for what it was: a transitional offering that was practically end-of-life when it left the gate. Windows Phone 8 is Microsoft's real long haul darling, and when Brian discovered I was looking to replace my Venue Pro with something more robust, he asked HTC to send me their flagship Windows Phone 8 handset, the Windows Phone 8X. He's already run performance and battery tests, but we haven't really talked about what Windows Phone offers that Android and iOS don't, and how effective it can be as a daily driver. That changes today.

Email for Windows RT: Help is on the way

If you're disappointed by Microsoft's Windows 8 Mail app, help could soon be on the way in the shape of a Windows Store version of TouchDown, the popular mobile mail app.
Microsoft's default Windows Store email client for Windows 8 is pretty basic. It's slowly gaining features, but it's no match for the email clients we've grown used to over the years.
That's not a problem for Windows 8 on the desktop, where it quickly becomes a secondary tool for sharing email from other Windows Store apps, and most email ends up being handled by Outlook or Exchange, or whatever you were using before you upgraded.

Google+ Streams To Flipboard With New API

follow @moshmustapha on twitter for more or like on facebook Mosh M Blog

We’ve reached the point in social networking where platforms are based on aggregating content from other social networking platforms to make them easier to consume. Each of these platforms, such as Pinterest andFlipboard need partnerships with social networking sites in order to gain adoption. Flipboard, an iPad app that’s becoming available on other platforms including Android, just got a nod from Google to integrate Google+ into its streams.
Flipboard grabs content from Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and a number of other social networking platforms. Now it also pulls content from Google+ to create a magazine-like experience on an iPad or other mobile device. You can browse the content your friends are reading and posting about on those other sites. If a friend reads an article on the Washington Post that gets tagged on Facebook, that gets entered into your Flipboard table of contents. If your friend read the article, you must likely be interested in the topic as well.
Google’s VP of product management Bradley Horowitz announced the integration of Flipboard with Google+ through an API at LeWeb’12 in London this week, which was covered by TheNextWeb.com and other sites. Flipboard’s entry to Google+ though an API is actually part of Google’s new Google+ APIs. In the case of Flipboard, the new Google+ API provides additional content from Google+ to Flipboard user streams. Through the Google+ integration, users can access posts, photos, videos and other data from the magazine-like app.
While apps like Flipboard need partners like Google to attract users, Google also needs integration with apps such as Flipboard to bring users to the growing social network. Horowitz said it’s seen an uptick in interactions on Google+ since the app added Google’s social networking site’s content to its magazine content.
Google has its own social news magazine, Currents, which is seen as a competitor to Flipboard. Though Google likely realizes that in order for Google+ to thrive, it needs to forge relationships with these other platforms, even ones that compete with Google products and services.
Tech blogger Robert Scoble posted comments on his Google+ account regarding the new API and integration with Flipbook. He began his post by admitting that he moved his attentions to posting on Facebook rather than Google+ because that content streamed to Facebook.
In his post, Scoble exclaimed, “This is the beginning of a real API. One that can write and read.”
Scoble expanded on his thoughts. “Why isn’t this API open to all developers? Because Google doesn’t yet have good noise controls and is wanting to make sure they build their social garden stage-by-stage and not be forced later to piss off developers because they need to change their API to product their user experience here.”
LeWeb’12 London is being held this week for industry stakeholders to discuss issues and new web products. Other speakers include Ethan Beard from Facebook, Henrick Berggren from Readmill, Andreas Constantinou from Vision Mobile, Nick D’Aloisio from Summly, and Joe Fernandez from Klout. Flipboard is not listed as a presenter at the conference.

The goal came when when Emmanuel Emineke collected a ball from Mikel and created space for himself to fire low past Mweene for his second goal of the competition.

Thousands of crocodiles on the loose in South Africa

Up to 15,000 crocodiles made their bid for freedom when floods washed them into one of southern Africa’s biggest rivers, the Limpopo, in northern South Africa near the Botswana border.
They were being bred at a farm which sells crocodile skin to the fashion industry.
Owners opened the gates, fearing flood water would crush the reptiles. Instead the creatures were able to make their escape.
Many of the crocodiles have been recaptured, but more than half are still on the loose.
One made it as far as a school rugby field 120 kilometres away.
Heavy rains and flooding have claimed at least 20 lives in South Africa and neighbouring Mozambique and led to thousands being evacuated from their homes.

Nokia’s Gamble With Windows 8 Phone Pays Off: Lumia Models Catapults The Leader Back Into Game

follow @moshmustapha on twitter for more or like on facebook Mosh M Blog

Looks like Nokia’s gamble with Windows Phone is finally beginning to pay off. After consecutive quarters of disappointing results, the former world leader in mobile phones managed to jump up out of red during Q4 2012. Nokia managed to sell 4.4 million Lumia smartphones during this period, a much needed perk for the company, especially after a difficult Q3 when 2.9 million Lumia smartphones were shipped.
The total for Lumia stands at 14.3 million units until December 31, 2012. These figures completely match Nokia’s expectations for Q4. What comes as more good news for the company is that its overall sales volume in the North American market also saw an increase of 40 percent year-to-year, to 700,000 during Q4 2012. Q2 and Q3 saw Nokia selling 600,000 and 300,000 respectively.
While the U.S. sales are yet to register a dramatic increase, looks like Nokia’s slow and steady approach is definitely pushing the company in a positive direction. The future also looks promising for Nokia, which is all set to unveil more Windows Phone based devices at the upcoming World Mobile Congress to be held in February 2013.

Who is Prophet Muhammad?

follow @moshmustapha for more

In the name of Allah, the beneficent the merciful
“Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, and those with him… When you see them, you will find them making Rukuh (bowing down) and Sujud (prostration in prayers), and craving for the blessings from Allah and His pleasure. They have the marks of Sujud (prostration) on their foreheads, the traces of their prostration. This is their similitude in the Torah; and their similitude in the Gospel: they are like the seed which puts forth its sprout, then strengthens it, then becomes thick and stands firmly on its stem, delighting the sowers of the seed, so that through them He may enrage the unbelievers. Yet to those of them who will believe and do good deeds, Allah has promised forgiveness and a great reward”- (Qur’an 48:27-29)
YES. Who is, not who was Muhammad? I refuse to refer to him in the past because the Prophet of Islam (may Allah’s peace and benedictions be on his soul in Madinah) lives in the present. I prefer to refer to him in the present because his legacies make all allusions to him in the present a categorical imperative.
In other words, though he died 1,421 years ago, Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) did not actually die. Rather, he lives on in the hearts of billions of Muslims and on the tongues of countless number of creatures of the Almighty who celebrate his shining patrimony and strive to emulate, based on the correct knowledge and understanding, his exemplary legacy.
Thus, when I say who is Muhammad? It is with the decided agenda to remind you of the known, the unknown and the unknowable. Those, who properly understand his message among Muslims, know Muhammad. To those, who are ignorant of the core messages of his vocation but who are only emotionally attached to him, Muhammad is unknown. To those who use the negative exteriorities and reality in Muslim life all over the world as evidence of his message, Muhammad is unknowable.
His full name is Abul Qasim Muhammad b. Abdullah b. Abdul Mutallib b. Hashim b Abdul Manaf b. Adnan. His mother is Aminah, daughter of Wahab. He was born on Monday, he was commissioned into Prophethood on Monday, he left Makkah on migration (hijrah) to Madinah on Monday, he arrived Madinah on Monday, he placed the black stone on its present spot in the Kaaba on Monday, he died on Monday.
Who is Muhammad – upon him be peace and blessings of Allah? He is the man, who was born an orphan but rose to become a head of state. Thus it appears Allah wishes to remind Muslim parents of today who usually assume their presence is sine qua non for the success of their children to key-in into the odyssey of the birth of our leader. He had a father, named Abdullah, who lived till such a time he delivered the “seed” in the womb of his wife, Aminah, before he was transmitted to the great beyond. The unspoken moral here should not be lost on us- live every moment of your life as if it the last; know that it is good to be important in life.  Be aware that it is more important to be good and be God-conscious.
Yes Aminah, the Prophet’s mother also received the “seed” as a trust and nurtured it to maturation. She gave birth to and reared the young Muhammad till such a time the infant could be separated from the womb and the bosom that bore him before she departed this world.
Again, Amina’s life is a signifier to humanity that parents are agents in the hands of the unknowable scheme of the Almighty, we are puns - children and their forebears- in the chessboard of our Creator.
In other words, children, who see their parents on a daily basis easily forget their Creator, they shout and chorus at every moment, my daddy, my mummy! But those who have no parents to call take solace in their recourse to the Almighty on a permanent basis. Thus while the former shouts my daddy! My mummy! The latter shouts Ya Rabb! Ya rabb! (My Lord! My Lord!)
The whole life of Muhammad (s.a.w) is designed to teach what none other than the Almighty could teach. When Muhammad lost his mother at six, after having lost his father while he was in the womb, we are reminded that it is a privilege for us to be there, to be “daddied” and “mummied” by our children: the child would attain to his destiny with or without the intervention of his parents!
Again, Prophet Muhammad was born as an heir to a prophetic tradition, the apogee of which was Prophet Ibrahim (upon him be peace and blessings of Allah). From Prophet Ibrahim down to Prophet Ismail down to Abdullah, father of Prophet Muhammad, certain light of excellence, the gravitas of moral rectitude was inherited from one to the other.
In other words, the seed from which Muhammad emerged and the womb that bore him were of the purest stock. Put graphically, the womb that bore Muhammad never played host, prior to her marriage to Abdullah, to the chemical-genetic fluid of the fornicator. Humans often desire to reap where they do not sow, some men desire to marry virgins even as they go about the cities defiling women. They often assume, and erroneously too, that they can come to equity with soiled hands!
Before he was commissioned as a prophet, his nudity was never seen, he never drank alcohol, never ate from a feast dedicated to idols and never swore by anything other than the Almighty. He was light in complexion, his shoulders were broad, his face usually shined brightly as if on a dark night. He had black hair, tender skin, broad chest, moderate height and high forehead.
Though sweet in speech, he kept silent most of the time. He usually walked rapidly and lightly with long strides. His clothing generally consisted of two pieces of cloth. He used to begin and end speeches with bismillah. He used to look more on to the ground than he did to the heavens out of respect for and awe of the authority in the heavens. He never repelled evil with evil but with good.
Who was that man? He was the unlettered Prophet who was given a book, which made knowledge the most worthwhile investment one could bequeath to the world. He never had a chance of learning from a scholar but was blessed with a book, which makes scholarship the best profession known to humanity. He was given a book, which talks about astronomy and space exploration at a time the NASA and the powers that be in the US had not been born.
He was given a book, which talks about biology and reproduction at a time the human physiology was still unknown and uncharted. He was given a book, which talks about geology and archaeology at a time oceanography and oil exploration had not occurred to humanity; he was given a book, which talks about economics and the evil of round-tripping at a time the stock market had not been conceived, he was given a book which talks about numerology at a time algebra and the only formula I remember of the mathematics I was taught in my post-primary school- the almighty formula- had not been discovered.

Emerging Markets

What are Emerging Markets?
A term coined in 1981 by Antoine W. Van Agtmael of the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank. Emerging markets are those countries or geographic regions with a previously untapped potential for investment, these countries are restructuring their economies along market-oriented lines and offer a wealth of opportunities in trade, technology transfers, and foreign direct investment. Such countries constitute approximately 80% of the global population.
Nations typically characterized under this banner are often developing countries, but they may also be economically formidable countries with markets that are increasingly open to exports. The big emerging markets-BEMs share certain characteristics, they have large territories and populations, and they are undertaking extraordinary development projects that call for new infrastructure, such as power-generating plants and telecommunications systems. And, of course, with development comes increased demand for consumer goods, like computers and household appliances.
