World football governing body FIFA has written to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to come forward with facts behind the recent mind-boggling 79 and 67 goals recorded in two Nigeria National league playoff matches.
This much was made known to the sporting press in Abuja on Tuesday by the chairman of the Nigeria National League, Chief Emeka Inyama, while inaugurating the investigative panel to address the current series of petitions against the management of the second tier league of the country. Chief amongst the petitions is the one in respect of the withdrawal of Zamfara FC from the league.
According to Inyama, who is the spokesperson for the NFF board, FIFA has asked the NFF to explain. “We just have to save Nigerian football, things cannot continue like this, only recently FIFA wrote to us to raise questions on the scandalous goal margins in our league, and with the setting up of this type of investigative panel, we intend to address things.”
The investigative panel which has one month to turn in its report has Chief Emmanuel Ochiagha as chairman. Others are Paul Bassey, Charles Ojugbana, Toyin Ibitoye and Barrister Isaac Danladi.
The committee’s terms of reference are: To investigate the authenticity of the petitions sent to the secretariat of the NNL on Zamfara United FC’s withdrawal from the league; to determine the extent of involvement of persons so mentioned; to determine/recommend appropriate punishment for culprits; suggest and recommend appropriate measures to avert reoccurence, while suggesting ways of curbing hooliganism in league matches.
