Sharks Behavior Swayed by Moon: Study

A new research has shed light on the fact that diving pattern as visible in sharks can be swayed by full moon. Other parameters are water, temperature and time of day.
Speaking on the findings, Gabriel Vianna, from the University of Western Australia (UWA) in Perth said, "To our knowledge, this is the first time such patterns have been observed in detail for reef sharks".

The researchers reached the finding after tracking 40 grey reef sharks, usually available on coral reefs in northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific. During the study it was found that these sharks remained in deep water during full moon and also dived into shallow water in new moon.
The sharks present near Palau, east of the Philippines, were studied for two years. The published study the journal Plos One highlighted that sharks descended to greater depths during full moon. They also used a wider choice of depths in this period.
The reason that has been attributed to the behavior pattern is that these sharks are cold blooded. This is the rationale why they prefer warmer water. The point is that they want to conserve their energy. Even in the morning, sharks are found to reside deeply in the ocean.
